Solvang is home to some of the most unique and diverse shops in Santa Barbara County. While you might not expect it, a spiritual Mecca awaits everyone interested in visiting a handsome orange Tabby named Ernest, a gorgeous collection of custom and estate jewelry, and every type of sparkling rock or gemstone you might be looking for. I’m talking about The Mystic Merchant.

Located on Copenhagen Drive, and nestled between a quilting shop and a women’s clothing store, the window display alone stops many passers-by. Those intrigued enough to enter are greeted by the delightful scent of local Sage burning in blessing. Many guests just pop in to catch a glimpse of the “store owner” Ernest, or go on a treasure hunt to find out which drawer he is napping in at the moment.

From small gifts including candles, beauty products, mood rings and more; to large gifts including furniture, tapestries, statues, and large geodes – there is a lot to look at! In addition to the hundreds of gift ideas that the helpful staff will help you sort through to find “just the right thing”, the shop also offers daily services including Palm Reading, Tarot Reading, and Aura Photography with interpretation. Note: The services change every day so call the shop before you come in if you are looking for something specific.

I decided to have my aura photo taken for this article, and I’ve included it below in case you aren’t familiar with the process. Along with my photo I received a print out of the different colors and their meanings, as well as a review of the colors and their placement by the aura specialist who took my picture. The process took about 15 minutes and when we were finished I had a fun souvenir to take home for the day.

The Mystic Merchant staff and store are very close to my heart: I have wandered in many times to replenish my stock of Reiki-charged candles (an incredible buy at 3/$5) and to look for that perfect rock to balance out my day.
